Controlling Azolla on dams through nutrient reduction – Torwood

December 1, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

All landholders invited to two farm walks and discussions looking at Bob Gray’s trial sites.

Morning field day 10am-12noon – Controlling Azolla on dams through nutrient reduction
Azolla on farm dams can clog pipes, and impede pumps. This field day will consider the steps that landholder, Bob Gray took to mitigate nutrients and sediment entering the dam, and the effect this had on azolla growth and water quality.

Landholders are invited to stay for lunch & then attend the afternoon workshop on agroforestry.

Afternoon field day – 1-3pm Comparing economics of agroforestry vs traditional grazing in steep country
Bob has established a 40ha forestry operating targeting sawlog production. The property is located on steeper Strzelecki hills which are subject to slipping, tunnel erosion and pugging damage especially by cattle. The proposal is to establish 5 monitoring sites looking at 3 species with 2 aspects (west and south facing) to measure tree growth. This will provide objective information to compare economics of sawlog production versus traditional grazing enterprises.
